ALTHOUGH 2012 was a terrible year for dairy farming with the weather taking a toll on crops and milk prices going up and down — it did not deter Carmarthenshire farmers from entering the annual NMR herd competition.

A dinner was held recently at the Half Way in Nantgaredig where the winners were announced.

The main herd competition was judged by Iwan Huws, from Anglesey, who was very impressed with the quality of the cows he saw on his visits to the various farms in Carmarthenshire.

Jack Watts, from Caerphilly, was the judge for the herds entering the young stock competition and he also said he was impressed with the standard of the stock.

The winners were A&C Davies, of Caerlleon, Llanboidy, who won the small herd competition on production and inspection with their Holstein herd.

ER & ME Jones & Sons, of Cilfeithy Uchaf, Kidwelly, were the winners of the large herd competition.

Winners of other classes in the competition were SP & SR Davies, of Brynhyfryd, Hebron, Whitland; Penhill Farms Ltd, of Ferryside; Glanmor Jerseys, of Parcgwyn, Laugharne; WR & M Thomas & Son, of Tyreglwys, Llangennech, and DE & A Davies, of Blaencout, St Clears.

The competition will be held again in the summer.

Hilary Masella, NMR area manager and competition secretary, said: "We hope that there will be many entries, especially farms who have not entered before. New entrants are always welcome and this is a good way to show off your stock to the rest of the farming community."
