Hundreds of litres of illegal wine seized from Neath shops
WINE which did not have duty paid on it has been seized from two grocery shops in Neath.
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) officers emoved 536 litres of Melodia and Minini wines from one outlet and 198 litres of mixed wines from another.
The duty evaded on the haul is estimated at £1,959 and investigations are continuing. No arrests have been made at this stage and the shops concerned are not being identified.
Bob Gaiger from HMRC said: “Smugglers care little for the quality of the product they sell, and don’t care about undercutting honest businesses whose livelihoods are threatened by this illegal activity.
“I would urge anyone offered alcohol at knock-down prices to steer clear, because buying these items has far reaching effects way beyond a cheap drink.”
The seizures were made on September 24 and 25.
