A HUGELY ambitious masterplan has been unveiled to drag Port Talbot out of its dark industrial past and into a dazzling future.

Council officials have an SA1-style vision of new retail, residential, leisure and commercial developments in areas including the docks and the River Afan corridor over the next 15 years.

The bus station could be moved across town to sit alongside an upgraded railway station and a new car park, while the near-derelict Plaza Cinema is set for resurrection to help create a more attractive gateway into the town.

Redevelopment plans have also been confirmed for the old gas works site and the Green Park Industrial Estate, and on swathes of land opened up by the town's new £84 million dual carriageway.

The existing town centre will also be enhanced and protected, with new links to the regeneration sites, including a boulevard running between the waterfront and town station via a new bridge at the railway station.

Council head of regeneration, Gareth Nutt, said: "What we are doing is planning for recovery. We are putting in place opportunities and plans so that when the recovery comes we will be on the starting block and not 50 yards behind it."

    “Who owns the plaza cinema?
Why has it been allowed to rot?
to see it turned into a place for the community to use.
    Is it for sale?
id love to buy it and do it up as a community use building
    scouts, sports groups, charities, etc”

“Having read the proposed plan for Port Talbot, I cannot believe that this Council are stupid enough to build more homes next to the proposed filth BioMess - yes BioMESS Power station that's to be built at the Docks area. What would be wonderful news would be that the Council are building an SA1 type development and like Swansea¿s SA1 area - have ditching the Biomess Power station ¿ based on health reasons ¿ why can we not do the same in Port Talbot!!!. You could easily build a marina and build a tidal barrier or barrage across the mouth of the River Afan estuary which would seriously enhance the area and at the same time if you incorporate water turbines, you could generate electricity.
I hope they remove significant amounts of earth and have large earth cappings because the ground near the old gas works and most of the docks area have very toxic contamination.
I would have more confidence in the Council doing anything right if they at least finish what they have already started ¿ namely the Bowling Rink and the Farm foods developments.”

“Port Talbot is in a mess and quite honestly I blame the Labour voters because even when things are clearly getting worse they vote Labour no matter what. Until they wake up nothing will change.”

“I think it will take the sacking of the entire local authority to revamp port talbot - they just havent got a clue. they cant even run the facilities they have without farming them out to other organisations”

“For goodness sake Neath should be sorted out first as since Neath Port talbot merged PT seems to be the first to have everything!!”

“Protect the town center with moving the bus station ? it will become empty as people wont walk there when there is a new large tescos not far from a new bus staion . Revamping station road and puting a bridge back over the railway track to the new shops would be money well spent instead .”

“Hope this doesn't go the same way as the bowling alley and Farmfoods that the council assured would be completed ages ago.
Port Talbot could be so much better, but I don't believe the council has the vision. Just look at all the wasted opportunity on the sea front.”

“Personally, I prefer the 'dark industrial past' rather than dazzling future. It gave us something to be proud of when Wales HAD an industrial past!”

“I take it the timing of this announcement has nothing to do with European elections this year and a general election not too far away has it?”
