PLANS have been rubber-stamped to inject £1 million into a number of Swansea hospital theatres, bringing them up to scratch.

Urgent action is being taken to revamp the facilities at the city's Morriston Hospital, according to a report being put before health board chiefs today.

The planned refurbishment work will cover the main theatres at the hospital site, including theatre one, two and three.

A total of £1 million has been allocated through this year's capital programme and the theatres have been prioritised for the work, in the wake of a dilapidation survey.

The work is going to be carried out during the financial year.

Upgrade

In the report by Paul Stauber, director of planning at ABM University Health Board, he said: "The work includes the upgrade of the existing fabric including new flooring, ceilings and wall finishes, new doors, frames and ironmongery, sanitary installations, new pendants, fixtures and fittings and the installation of a new IPS/UPS system to comply with current guidance for the protection of the electrical system within operating theatres.

"Interserve Project Services, have been selected from ABM University Health Board Local Construction Framework to undertake the project.

"In accordance with Standing Orders, Chairman's action was taken to approve the project approach and accept the awarding of the contract to Interserve Project Services."

“When I had surgery a couple of years ago, I was taken into theatre to be given my anaesthetic. It was bright, I was surrounded by BRILLIANT STAFF who did a FANTASTIC JOB.

Surely it's the care and workmanship of the staff that's important rather than a pretty theatre.”
