Horse meat: Plant near Aberystwyth is investigated
A plant in West Wales and a slaughterhouse in Yorkshire are under investigation in connection with allegedly supplying horse meat mislabelled as beef.
Peter Boddy Licensed Slaughterhouse, in Todmorden, is believed to have supplied horse carcasses to Farmbox Meats Ltd, Llandre in Aberystwyth.
Both plants were suspended yesterday while investigations continue.
The Food Standards Agency and the police are looking into the circumstances through which meat products, allegedly mislabelled as beef for kebabs and burgers, were sold.

A police spokesman said: "Dyfed-Powys Police accompanied the Food Standards Agency officials to the meat premises in Llandre, Aberystwyth and facilitated their entry into the premises. At this time it is an FSA investigation."
Andrew Rhodes, FSA Director of Operations, ordered an audit of all horse producing abattoirs in the UK after the issue first arose last month.
Mr Rhodes said he was shocked to uncover what appears to be "blatant misleading of consumers."
Environment Secretary Owen Paterson said: "This is absolutely shocking. It’s totally unacceptable if any business in the UK is defrauding the public by passing off horsemeat as beef.
"I expect the full force of the law to be brought down on anyone involved in this kind of activity."

“The real concern has to be if he was supplying Bronglais Hospital, local schools and the University's Halls”

“Yet another lost comment
Not just incorrect labelling but it's time this process of stuffing up to 30% water into meat was stopped.
When I buy bacon, very rarely now, I expect bacon not water & the same with other slimy sliced meat.
What do the FSA do, clearly no testing as it's taken a whistle-blower to start this belated investigation. Maybe they oversea that retailers carry out testing in which case they've failed except in probably collecting bonuses”

“This must have come as a massive disappointment to all the EU haters, having this happen here in Wales rather than somewhere in E Europe”

“Dafydd Raw Rees is an ex President of the Student Union of Aberystwyth University and very well connected, he was elected as a Conservative.”

“What a huge let down for welsh farmers if this abattoir is found guilty. A bit like being shot by one of your own side. The owner of this place was arrested on suspicion of producing unfit meat some ten years ago though not charged.”
