MORE than 100 Pwll properties are considered to be under threat of flooding in an extreme flood event, say experts.

Environment Agency Wales says the houses most at risk are in the Bassett Terrace and Stepney Road areas.

The findings have come from river modelling work by the agency, which was carried out to better understand the flood risk from the River Dulais in Pwll.

The details were relayed to Pwll residents at a public meeting.

The investigations followed last summer's flooding when a number of homes alongside the river were affected.

Local residents who had experienced flooding in the area in the past shared details of their experiences with the agency.

Llanelli MP Nia Griffith, who chairs the Llanelli Flood Forum, said: "I was very, very concerned by the flooding that happened in Pwll and was determined to get something done about it."

Environment Agency Wales's Andy Irving, who was recently appointed project manager in Llanelli to lead the investigation into the area's flooding issues, said: "I'm grateful to those residents who took time to visit my local office and who provided useful information to support this modelling work."

Phil Pickersgill, the Agency's South West Wales flood risk manager, added: "We have made an excellent start in understanding the risk in the village.

"We now need to move forward and look at possible schemes to provide an effective long-term solution for the residents living alongside the river in Pwll.

"We will continue to keep the local community updated."

Further modelling work is planned.
