HERE is a view of Swansea Castle that would have been familiar to many from the city's maritime heritage.

Demolition of buildings on The Strand has revealed a secret side of the castle.

Disused warehouses on the street have been cleared to make way for new housing but until the 19th century the River Tawe flowed along what is now The Strand, and the castle would have dominated the view for people sailing into and out of Swansea.

Eventually the area became dominated by warehouses and jetties before a new channel was created for the river — New Cut.
