A HAUNTED Swansea Valley hotel which has become a star in its own right is up for sale.

As well as being a popular venues for weddings Craig y Nos Castle starred in the hit show Doctor Who in September 2005 and Most Haunted in 2004.

And now, the 40-bedroom castle, is up for sale for a cool £1.5 million.

Craig y Nos Castle was built between 1840 and 1843 and was once home to the estate of the celebrated opera diva Adelina Patti who, during her lifetime, became one of the world's most famous and highly regarded entertainers.

The singer paid £3,500 in 1878 for the property, which is believed to be the first house in Wales to have private electricity.

It was a children's tuberculosis sanatorium for almost 40 years from 1922 to 1959.

Current owner Martin Gover has run the venue as a country house hotel for 11 years and said he is selling up because he wants to relocate to England with his Russian wife Olga to be near his widowed mother Georgina, who is now in her 80s.

Mr Gover said it could take two years to find a buyer for the Victorian castle which takes between £50,000 and £75,000 every year in income from visiting ghost hunters.

Mr Gover originally bought the property for £650,000 in a deal completed in October 2000.

The 51-year-old said the roof was leaking so badly when he first took it on that he found 160 buckets collecting water at the property.

He has since spent around £3 million carrying out major repair work over the last 11 years.

Mr Gover said: "I am keen really that any new owner carries on running it as a business.

"I will not allow it to be sold in any other way.

"We have got £1 million of forward bookings over the next two years for weddings and events and that is in a quiet period."

The castle owner said the previous owners bought the building for around £200,000 and used it to house around six antiques fairs a year.

“I'd love to buy that and 1.5 mil isn't much for what it is.”
