A NEW era could be about to dawn for Swansea's run down High Street, after decades of neglect.

Retailers are showing a renewed sense of confidence in the once vibrant shopping district.

Bar boss Noah Redfern is following the success of his popular venue in Uplands by investing in a vintage homeware and accessories store on High Street selling furniture and kitchen products.

The Noah's Yard founder is backing the as-yet unnamed store which will open in March next year as one of the first retail occupiers of the £25 million Urban Village development from housing provider Coastal.

He said: "I viewed the place four to five months ago and got excited about it.

"It looks like it is going to be a really cool part of town. I am all for regeneration and I can see the vision they have got."

Mr Redfern's interest in a unit at the Urban Village follows the opening of the Mosaic restaurant as the first tenant of the development last month.

Transport chiefs also celebrated a £7.6 million revamp of Swansea's High Street railway station in June this year.

And one of the big supermarket chains is also rumoured to be interested in opening a site in the Urban Village.

Mr Redfern's shop will form part of what is being hailed as the Swansea Creative Hub in and around the Urban Village development.

Swansea Creative Hub's Project Director Huw Williams said: "The most exciting recent development besides Mosaic is the forthcoming vintage homeware and accessories store which will open on High Street in the new year, plus the soon to be opened co-working short-term and affordable office space for creatives in association with Indycube."

Indycube is a non-profit company offering workspace to everyone from early stage startups to established freelancing agents.

Coastal is also working on redeveloping Swansea's Castle Quarter with an £8 million scheme of 26 affordable rented apartments, four duplex units overlooking Swansea Castle, and a small number of commercial units as well as a kiosk on the Strand.

“Crick, that eyesore is being renovated to an extreme. Were not not aware? Here is a link to what the plan includes: http://tinyurl.com/8wzmou7

On topic, Sainsbury's have confirmed that they are NOT the supermarket chain rumoured to be moving in to one of the new buildings. To be honest, I am not surprised it isn't them. There is one supermarket chain that as of yet still has no presence in Swansea, Waitrose. This is complete conjecture from my part, but considering it is a more upmarket variant of supermarket chain regarding prices, it would not surprise me if they planned to open a new shop in what is going to turn into one of the more affluent area's of the city.

You only have to see the plans, and then interiors of the buildings already built, that the Urban Village is not intended for those on benefits. I don't wish to sound mean, but the affluent an area, the tougher police get to remove the riff raff from the area. High Street will likely be transformed beyond recognition.”

“So basically there is a rumour that a big supermarket chain are in talks with a view to possibly opening a small "local" style store? If it does come to fruitition I'll be interested to see what "fresh blood" there is on this depressing eyesore of a street to be sucked out by it, as Stephen G11 seems to think?”

“I should have added, which supermarket chain? bet it is another Tesco, probably the small local format, to suck some of the fresh blood out of the street.”

“Lot's of amusing comments here but personally I think that High street has already improved beyond recognition from 2 years ago and the siting of the Quadrant where it is had much more to do with the previous dreliction than did the 20 or so deadbeats who now infest the area. as to the "up market brothel area" when on earth was that?!”

“Jules, you don't trust traffic lights? Do you not cross the road at all anywhere then?

Personally I have never seen a single incident or issue with the lights or traffic in that area.”

“Just quick note, if you find your accounts are being disabled on this site due to over sensitive or narcissistic admins, here is how you can register a new one in seconds and render them useless.

Google "tempoary email address" use those to re register a new account here in seconds.

I like to use gorilla mail, this site has banned the default @ SHARKLAZERS thanks to me, but select another one from the drop down list and use that.

Then use that as the address to re register here. Authenticate the email which is instant, You can use the same alias if you want, just add numbers at the end of so the admin knows its still you.

New account in less than a minute.”

“There are a million places a job centre can go, and the same goes for the housing office and the hundreds of flats there that are mostly filled with people who have not done a days work in years.

Nothing wrong with them being there no, but its laughable people then act all surprised that the area is a dive, what did you think these people were going to bring to the area.

The area is like that becausee of the majority of people go there are not functional.
I see them drinking and taking drugs on a daily basis, hanging outside the job centre swearing spitting, I admit these are mostly young people, but they look like and sound dysfunctional to the point where you know they are going nowhere fast and will only bring the area down.

Go and check out the crime stats in the gower and compare it to a council estate on the outskirts of swansea, you will see EXACTLY what I mean.

you can also start by knocking down the full moon pub and the swans, which looks to be nothing more than a community centre for unemployed alcoholics.

I see them all the time, smoking outside the pub with that look of liver damage in their eye.

Move the trash out and things will improve. Its that simple and will not change unless you do that, so decide what you want, a hovel, or a place you might want to visit.”
