South Wales Evening Post

I WRITE to your paper in relation to the Government announcement that they are to cut the Armed Forces by 20,000.

I would like to, through your newspaper, salute this incompetent, heartless and spineless Government of making one of the biggest mistakes in the history of our once-great country.

The announcement comes just as three of our brave servicemen who were killed in Afghanistan, are repatriated to their grieving families and friends, where they along with many servicemen and women paid with their lives, in order to provide safety and freedom for the UK and the rest of the world.

While the many tears of all who attended the repatriation were still pouring from the dead soldiers' families and friends eyes, the secretary of defence, whose name is not worthy of a mention, named the 17 units that were to face the axe.

It was as if he were reading out the football results on a Saturday afternoon.

This is the same politician that makes flying visits to Afghanistan surrounded by armed bodyguards, posing for photographs with our troops in order to say "I was there" knowing perfectly well that most of the hands he shook during his visits would soon be receiving their P45s.

Heaven help Britain if we were to be involved in any future conflicts, because we could and would not be able to sustain our superiority over any country, large or small, and could you honestly see any of our redundant soldiers falling over themselves to help this present Government in their time of need?

This would result in conscription, and that breeds indiscipline within the rank and file, that's why we were once the most feared and respected military force in the world simply because of one word — 'volunteer'.

Take that word away and you take the 'Great' out of Britain and the 'United' out of Kingdom.

Well at least there are suitable, safe and comfortable underground bunkers for our brave politicians to run and hide in if big trouble actually hits Britain.

I have served for more than 30 years in the military during good and bad times and witnessed many changes, also good and bad. However, these changes will send us back to the Victorian times.
