A PROUD mum whose heart-troubled son organised a charity bash said they'd been staggered by people's generosity.

Caroline Powell and 15-year-old Mitchell raised more than £2,000 at Swansea Dockers Club on Wednesday evening — double what they'd hoped for.

The money will go to the British Heart Foundation, which has supported Mitchell during his operations.

Mrs Powell said: "We've been overwhelmed with the support we've had.

"Mitchell's old dentist knocked on our door and gave us a cheque for £50. Neighbours have put cheques through our letterbox, and Spar in Waun Wen also gave us £50."

Swans fan Mitchell was born with a narrowing of the aortic valve and has undergone three major open heart operations, plus other procedures.

It has left him reliant on a pacemaker — and he's been told he'll need a full heart transplant in early adulthood.

He takes six tablets a day and must steer clear of magnets, which could interfere with his pacemaker and kill him.

The football-mad teenager gave a speech at Wednesday's event but declined to sing, as had been planned. The entertainment was left to the experts, who included Boys from the Black Cabs, Karl Lewis, Wendy Cane and her daughter, plus Ebony and Nathan, with Chris Norman compering.

A charity auction also took place, with a signed Arsenal shirt raising close to £300 and Liverpool shorts £150. Mitchell's sister, Kirsty, auctioned two weeks of ironing duties for nearly £200.

Mitchell's friends and teachers from Bishop Vaughan Catholic School were among the 250-strong crowd.

The day before, Mitchell, of Baptist Well Street, Waun Wen, had enjoyed VIP treatment at the Liberty Stadium, where the Swans drew with Coventry.

"He went to meet the manager — he was absolutely chuffed," said Mrs Powell. "(Paulo) Sousa told him he was a strong boy."
