Health bosses issue appeal to swimmers
PUBLIC health experts in Wales are urging people who have suffered a bout of illness to avoid going swimming.
They are reminding people who have had diarrhoea not to go into a swimming pool for at least 48 hours after their symptoms have ceased. People diagnosed with cryptosporidiosis are also advised to avoid using swimming pools for 14 days after their symptoms have stopped.
Chlorine disinfection kills most germs in pool water but cryptosporidium can survive the treatment.
Dr Rachel Chalmers, head of the Cryptosporidium Reference Unit for Public Health Wales, said: "Swimming is an enjoyable activity with many health benefits, but care needs to be taken to prevent water-borne illness such as diarrhoea caused by cryptosporidium infection. Swimmers behaviour is just one of the ways of helping to keep pools clean."

“I remember years ago, that virtually all swimming pools had a foot bath to walk through, before you could enter the pool. Those days seem to be gone, why ?”

“Swimming is enjoyable, the practices of hygiene at some pools do not keep up with modern day needs.
The failure to ensure the best practices in place,quote--"Swimmers behaviour is one way to keep pools clean"!, is like closing your eyes to what is happening.
Everyone should be made to pass through a disenfectant process, before entering the pool, the better the practice, the more popular the pool.”
