Group in gas objection bid
A GROUP opposed to shale gas extraction in Wales was due to tell MPs today that such activity went against UK Government objectives to reduce fossil fuel use.
WWF Cymru was set to give evidence to the Welsh Affairs Select Committee, which is conducting an inquiry into shale gas in Wales.
The environmental organisation said it opposed shale gas exploitation in Wales and the rest of the UK.
"We consider that extracting unconventional fossil fuels would be incompatible with short and long-term decarbonisation of the energy supply," it said in a statement.
"It would take the focus away from efforts to improve energy efficiency and to develop new sources of renewable energy. We consider that the claimed economic benefits of shale gas, in particular that it would reduce energy bills, have been overstated."
The cross-party parliamentary committee is hearing from other organisations including UK Onshore Gas Ltd and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Cymru.
