Greg's not joking when it comes to helping out an old mate
HE'S one of the UK's best loved comedians — and he is heading to the Swansea Valley later this year to show support for a former colleague who is battling cancer.
Stand-up Greg Davies, also known for his role as Mr Gilbert in hit sit-com The Inbetweeners, is to appear at Ystradgynlais Rugby Club for a charity fund-raiser.
The event has been organised by the club's hooker, Gareth Thomas, to raise money for the chemotherapy day unit at Singleton Hospital.
And Greg agreed to make an appearance at the club in November, after learning of Gareth's mother's fight with cancer.
Margaret Thomas, a former Ystradgynlais town councillor, used to be a teacher before her retirement, and for many years was Greg's boss, before he gave up the job to take to the stage.
The pair worked together at Langleywood School in Slough, where Greg taught English and drama, and was a head of year.
Margaret Thomas said: "Greg was a brilliant teacher in school.
"He was very popular with children, and was very firm, but very fair.
"We worked together for about eight years, and we were very sorry to see him go.
"He used to come round the house a lot, and he got to know our children. It is very thoughtful of him to help out.
"I have been surprised how many people follow him in Ystradgynlais. He is very popular."
Margaret is continuing to undergo treatment to fight cancer.
Tickets for the charity night, which features a host of generous raffle and auction prizes donated by local businesses, sold out within hours of going on sale.
The event is the latest organised by Margaret's son Gareth, who this weekend sets out from Rodney Parade rugby ground in Newport on a bike ride to each of the four Welsh rugby regions' stadia.
He said: "We are very grateful to Greg for agreeing to come to Ystradgynlais."
