BEING green has turned a Port Talbot school platinum.

Having worked its way up the Eco Schools ranks, Sandfields Primary School in Aberavon is now the proud owner of the platinum award, the highest possible. Head teacher Shirley Davies said the school had to meet challenges including litter reduction, energy saving and promoting global citizenship.

"Not many schools get the platinum award so we are over the moon.

"It means that other schools can now come here to see what we have done, to help them attain their own platinum awards," said Mrs Davies.

Mrs Davies said teacher Jenna Bevan, staff, pupils and the wider community were all involved in promoting a greener environment in and around the school.

"We will have to keep at it every year to maintain the platinum award," added Mrs Davies. "We worked hard to achieve it and definitely want to keep it."
