A LLANELLI theatre company is celebrating winning a national award for the second year running.

Llanelli Musical Players were handed the Best Production title for their performance of Pirates of Penzance at the National Opera and Drama Association Awards.

The group scooped the title last year for their production of Beauty and the Beast, and are hopeful their most recent show — Little Shop of Horrors — will bring a hat-trick.

Directed by Keira Spencer, and orchestrated by musical director Don Luke Spencer, the Australian version of Pirates of Penzance, complete with a megamix finale, ensured a full house and standing ovation each night at Theatr Elli.

And Llanelli Musical Players' chairwoman Joy Thomas said she was delighted with the accolade.

"The company is made up of adults and children, all of whom are committed to their love of performance and these awards are truly a recognition of talent, direction and of course all the tireless help offered backstage and by all the Carmarthenshire Theatre staff," she said.

"Llanelli Musical Players now look forward to performing our award-winning selection from those shows, at the upcoming Farewell to Theatr Elli gala evening on July 13, and are eager to perform in the new theatre in 2013.

"Let's hope we can keep bringing this prestigious award back to Llanelli."

Mrs Thomas added that the group has a busy time ahead, with plenty of performances planned over the coming months.

"After the farewell concert, we are doing spots at various things like Kidwelly Carnival," she said.

"On August 4 we will be performing at Kidwelly Castle, where we will do a collection of past musicals, and that's something we will put together with adults and children.

"Hopefully, depending on the weather, that will be out in the open air. And on September 29 we will be doing a concert at Mynyddygarreg Hall, which will be open to the public."

Young members of the group will also be showing off their stage skills at Llanelli Musical Players' Got Talent, which will be held at 7pm at the Catholic Church Hall in Waunlanyrafon on July 21.
