THE mother of a cleft lip and palate patient has taken part in a half-marathon in support of a service based at Morriston Hospital.

Joanne Carey raised £602.50 for the cleft lip and palate unit by running the Cardiff half marathon.

The Cardiff-based mum said she wanted to thank the staff for the care they have given to her one-year-old daughter Matilda.

The Morriston unit is the only one in Wales. Each year, it sees more than 50 new babies.

A cleft lip is often diagnosed at the mother's 20-week scan, and straightaway she is introduced to the unit staff. The team includes three specialist nurses who visit mums-to-be.

Adrian Sugar, clinical director at the unit, said: "Most of the patients we see come to us as babies, and they usually have surgery before their first birthday. However, our work doesn't stop there. We continue to support the patient as they grow up, providing other treatment such as speech and language therapy and specialist orthodontics and dental care."
