Glamorgan hold onto promotion hope at Oval
GLAMORGAN head to Surrey for their final match of the season, knowing anything less than an emphatic victory will see their promotion hopes dashed.
Matthew Maynard's side need to beat their second-from-bottom hosts and collect a clutch of bonus points if they are to have a chance of playing division one cricket next season.
The Dragons are currently fourth in the table, so need second-placed Essex and third-placed Northamptonshire to slip up if they are to sneak a spot in the top two.
Glamorgan have named an unchanged 13-man squad as Tom Maynard and Adam Shantry rejoin the 11 who managed a thrilling last-ball draw with Gloucestershire last Saturday.
"Everything's still in the mix and, ironically, we could be going to a pitch that suits us a lot more than the one we've just had in Cardiff," said spinner Robert Croft.
"It's been pretty apparent that pitches at the Oval have been turning and Surrey have just signed an overseas spinner.
"If we keep playing good cricket we put ourselves in the hunt."
Glamorgan are one of five counties who can still go up along with champions Kent.
Gloucestershire host Kent at Nevil Road, while Northants face the visit of bottom club Leicestershire.
Fifth-placed Derbyshire host second-placed Essex in the game that will probably provide the team that wins promotion as runners-up.
"I think we're developing very nicely as a side," said Glamorgan captain Jamie Dalrymple.
"I think people can see that and if we can get used to playing on the front foot we'll get to where we want to get to.
"We can still go up with a good result at the Oval so there's a huge amount still to play for.
"I've heard people saying how pleasurable it is to still be playing for stuff in September, so we'll give it our best shot and if we're ready to go up, we'll go up."
