Free choice to speak Welsh
HERE we go again! Another crop of what I can only describe as anti-Welsh letters.
On Monday September 3, we had M Rees bemoaning the fact that Welsh is being 'foisted' on us and that soon we may even have to have medical treatment in Welsh. The only language that has ever been 'foisted' in Wales is, of course, English. The present policy of bilingualism is the correct one. It gives each language respect in society and leaves the user with free choice as to which one he or she uses. Next, V Collier (Have Your Say, Tuesday September 4) says we are wasting money, are inward looking and should be 'international', we've heard all this many times before. Welsh parents are so weak that they allow themselves to be 'frightened' into giving their children a Welsh-medium education!
Lastly, dear old K Clements chimes in with the claim that the £433 million spent by the Assembly on carbon-saving schemes has only resulted in creating 1,400 new jobs! I would suggest that the main aim of the exercise was to reduce carbon emissions. The jobs created are a bonus. It's a pity that we can't pull together and make Wales a better place for all instead of re-fighting battles that in their case have been lost.
