POLICE have issued a stark warning about the dangers of the drug meow meow.

A senior South Wales officer has said the force has "serious concerns" about the rise in the drug and the effects it is having — and especially its association with violence.

Superintendent Phil Davies said there had been a "big increase" in its use in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot in the last year.

Police in Carmarthenshire have expressed similar concerns as the popularity of the drug — correctly called mephedrone — continues to soar, with Dyfed-Powys Police recording a 400 per cent rise in offences involving the drug in the county in the past year.

South Wales Police Superintendent Davies, head of operational policing in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, said: "We have seen a big increase in the use of mephedrone over the past 12 months.

"We have serious concerns about people using it — it is a powerful stimulant, and it seems to be associated with increased levels of violence.

"It is being sold by some dealers as a 'party drug', but that is very far from the truth. Daily we have issues with people taking the drug — people are being arrested, others hospitalised.

"The drug is being taken by a cross section of people — and taken with alcohol it is a devastating cocktail."

The superintendent said he had spoken to colleagues in Bridgend and Cardiff, but the drug was only a major issue in the western half of the force.

It is understood one of the problems in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot is heroin users switching to mephedrone — the supply of heroin on the streets has been dramatically cut following the police's ongoing Heroin Ruins Lives blitz.

Mr Davies said the maximum sentence for possession of mephedrone was five years, and possession with intent to supply was 14 years.

"It is a Class B drug and it is illegal to have it, give it away or sell it," he said. "The drug culture is continually changing and you have to try to stay one step ahead. I would urge anyone with information on mephedrone to come forward — we will take action."

“The reality is heroin use has been increasing at a huge rate year after year since the early 1990's.And Sorry to disappoint you hadoken, but no i don't take illegal drugs in any shape or form, nor do i drink alcohol. But there are people i know and some who i love even, who are heroin addicts, some smoke weed some don't smoke at all. Some who use for medical conditions, including M.S.Some are, other than"possession of"are hard working law abiding citizens. Some are alcoholics who are in a much worse state than the heroin addicts i know, some of whom have been smoking heroin while working the same job for over 20yrs.But i don't hear anyone talking about locking up licensee's and throwing away the key,and just give them bread and water, because prison is too easy.I don't know why i'm wasting my time replying to you.Obviously you make assumptions without any evidence. How can you say i am angry and stoned by reading my comment.Obviuosly you are an ignorant, arrogant fool.By the way"MAN",i suffer from a mental condition for which i took LEGALLY prescribed medication which the side effects were probably much more worse than that of cannabis. The only thing that is"FLAWED"is your attitude,MAN.”

“The biggest problem with Meow is the price as its roughly quarter the price of cocaine!
And with it being so cheap users will buy more. The police wont have a hope in hell to stop this but eventually meow will die down!...but then some other drug will be hitting our streets!”

“If something is deemed less socially accepable than another there is a greater chance that it has a lesser chance of mainstream success than something that is not. Just look at how uncool smoking has become in recent years.

I am confident of my stance, you are merely trying to ignore the obvious by entertaining the what ifs just to be awkward. But if you had to stake your life you know as well as I do you would go with my opinion.”

“@ hadoken6773: "That is a flawed argument, while it might not have stopped its rise, it probably stopped it from becoming as popular as it might have done if it were class B and more socially acceptable."
Your statement is also flawed as you have no way of knowing one way or the other: viz a viz, if the legal category of a substance is a deterrent or not.

In the case of victimless crimes, gaol sentences are unnecessary. If people want to get high for whatever reason, it should be their prerogative. Who are we to say what one can or cannot do with their own lives. Gaol should be used as a punishment for people who have committed wrongs on other people - not on themselves”

“"Heroin is class A,and that has not stopped the rise in addicts or put off dealers"

That is a flawed argument, while it might not have stopped its rise, it probably stopped it from becoming as popular as it might have done if it were class B and more socially acceptable.

And there is plenty of evidence to suggest smoking weed is bad for you. Judging by the sound of it you are one of those people who smoke it and are angry that you do not get your way.

I can assure you that people who smoke weed on a constant basis degrade as people, UNLESS there is something wrong with them to begin with, in which case, they often cite the drug as a positive thing BECAUSE they have undiagnosed low level mental health problems to begin with that the drug helps to erode either by making them forget or not care.

The bottom line is, most of the people who smoke weed should not need to take a drug to unwind, go to the cinema, go for a walk down the beach.

If you need to get stoned then go and seek some therapy and ask why you need to seek out more extreme forms of relaxation to begin with.

Or is that like too much of a reality check....man.”

“Heroin is class a,and that has not stopped the rise in addicts or put off dealers.Has for the supply of heroin being cut,I don't think so.that's what they want the public to believe,i know for a fact that's not true. Most of it comes to this area from Newport,Cardiff and Bristol in small quantities, brought by so many small time dealers and users they will never disrupt the supply, let alone stop it.The trouble is people are not educated and misinformed about most illegal drugs.I know that mephedrone is bad news, but the young people who are involved with drugs or thinking about it don't believe what they read, because there has been so much lying and propaganda about the issues in the press. Why are they going to listen to the people who tell them smoking a joint is bad news, but alcohol is ok.Don't smoke weed, tobacco is alright though.Mephedrone is an awful drug that ruins lives, and thats a fact. But are our youth going to listen to politicians, police and press when they have been telling lies for so many years about heroin, crack cocaine, ecstasy and cannabis. And has for prison,it has no effect in this so called war against drugs.Educate our children with the truth about all drugs in school, and a lot more will make the right decision when the time comes, and that time will definitely come in this day and age.And has for paying someone to grass up,our police force pays out tens of thousand pounds every year, mostly to scumbags who are dealers themselves.”

    “HACKERJACK

"It will also mean fake info is given to get quick cash."

No it wont, the cash will only be given out when someone is charged or when the evidence looks convincing enough to do so. If I came to buy your car, would you sign over the paperwork and let me drive the car away on the word of a stranger saying, oh I will sort you out next week when i get paid. I think not, so why would the police. They know when they have a likely conviction within hours.

If something is raised from CLASS B to A it has an impact on the severity of the sentences and it sends out a message to the users.

prisons should be a place where you never want to go, your clear desire to make them more or less comfy depedning on the crime is exactly WHY we are in this situation.

A crime is a crime, it should be seen as a place worth going to, ONLY THEN will change the behaviour.”
