"This is an exciting opportunity to join and lead Dyfed-Powys Police to protect the public and to further improve the service that our communities expect and deserve."

Mr Price was put forward for the job after completing a rigorous selection process involving a strong field of candidates, Mr Salmon said.

The other candidates were Jackie Roberts, who is currently in temporary charge of the force, and Nick Ingram, currently the deputy chief constable at Dyfed-Powys.

Mr Salmon said: "I am delighted to announce that Simon Prince, the assistant chief constable in Gwent, has successfully completed the assessments and interview process.

"The calibre of candidates was very high and I have been impressed with the contributions of all.

"Mr Prince's performance throughout the process was excellent. I am confident that he will bring strong leadership to Dyfed-Powys Police.

"His enthusiasm and ability to develop new ideas and innovative solutions will be essential to steer the force effectively through future challenges.

"I look forward to working with Simon as Chief Constable for Dyfed-Powys Police to deliver a policing service that is responsive to community needs".

Mr Salmon thanked the other candidates for their interest and the appointments panel.
