Flats proposal for arts centre
PLANS to turn Gower College Swansea's Llwyn y Bryn campus into 150 to 200 flats, or an extra care facility with residential apartments for the elderly, were submitted to Swansea Council early in 2011.
The Uplands site, off Walter Road and Brynymor Road, was originally a school in 1888 and then a girls' school from 1909. The site then developed into a sixth form campus, with new buildings added over time.
These days creative arts students and staff are based there. The site also has a theatre.
A survey of the site found potential issues including groundwater contamination, an electrical substation and Japanese knotweed.
If Welsh Government funding kick-starts the new campus (see main story), students and staff will at some point move there from Llwyn y Bryn.
