Firefighters tackling seven grass fires
FIREFIGHTERS were today simultaneously battling seven grass fires across the region.
A Mid West and Wales Fire Service spokeswoman said crews were in attendance at all locations and that the blazes were on-going.
The areas affected include land near the A4109 and Heol y Glyn, both in Glyneath, Campian Gardens, Clyne, Swansea, Cymmer Hill, Croeserw and Burry Green.
The spokeswoman said there was also a grass fire at the rear of the Ethnic Cuisine Ltd in Viking Way, Morriston.
Yesterday The Post revealed that since last Sunday, 340 field blazes had cost Mid West and Wales Fire Service almost £700,000.
Each of the fires is estimated to have cost about £1,970.
Fire officers are urging parents to educate their children not to play with matches or lighters, while farmers have been asked to act responsibly as well.
Fire chief Richard Webborn said the vast majority of fires over the past week had been deliberately started.
And he acknowledged some incidents had been "controlled agricultural fires" which had got out of hand.
He said: "It has been a busy and expensive time for us."

“I Hope the cretin who started these fires understands that whilst the crews are tackling "their little efforts" they could end up missing vital minutes on a real emergency where lives are at risk.”

“This is ridicolous, farmers have been burning on the Gower for a week now, all you can smell is smoke. Fire engines darting about everywhere.
Hope they stay safe!”
