THE fundraising efforts of fire fighters in Carmarthen has paid off, resulting in £1,700 for local charities.

The funds were raised at Carmarthen fire station's open day last summer and the annual pre-Christmas collection held in the town centre. The money has been split between Help for Heroes, the Fire Fighters Charity and the Canolfan Elfed department of Queen Elizabeth High School.

Carmarthen fire station crew manager Mark Butler said: "I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the public for donating so generously at the station open day and before Christmas."

Lieutenant Colonel John Skipper, who accepted the cheque on behalf of Help for Heroes, said: "Carmarthen fire station has raised a considerable amount of money which will go directly to supporting our armed forces community in Wales. I can't thank the crews enough."
