MYSTERY charity champion Mr X is gearing up once again to bring festive smiles to thousands of needy youngsters.

The reclusive, yet kind-hearted gent, has launched his 49th annual Christmas appeal.

He is confident his mission to ensure youngsters wake up with presents to open will be a success — despite fears about the credit crunch.

He said: "The best thing about my appeal is it is not about money, but the buying of presents.

"I know times are hard, but for some kids it's going to be even tougher.

"I'd hate for any child to wake up on Christmas Day with no presents to open."

The Mr X Appeal works by getting people of all ages to club together to buy Christmas presents for needy local children.

No one knows who Mr X is, but the mystery man — now thought to be in his 90s — assigns schools, offices and individuals a child to buy gifts for.

They get told the Christian name and age of the youngster, before going out and hitting the shops.

Mr X said this year he has over 4,500 kids across South West Wales on his list.

Speaking from his hideaway in Swansea, he said: "Last year was a great success. I was really heartened by how much people still care.

"Over the years fashions may have come and gone, but kindness and compassion for others is still alive and kicking in South Wales.

"I'd like that to be carried on this year, despite all the fears of the credit crunch.

"I've run the appeal through the recessions in the 1980s, so I'm hoping we can have a good show."

He added: "People can be creative with their spending.

"It's really not about how much you buy, but the thought of all that joy you will be bringing."

People wishing to play a part in this year's appeal should contact Mr X on 01792 776233, 07767 233427 or 07974 3900993.
