FELINFOEL ended Maesteg Quins' remarkable two-year 45-game unbeaten run in a high-quality game in Felinfoel in division two west.

The visitors started the game the better and gained their rewards with their big pack of forwards trundling over near the posts for a converted try.

Some aggressive Foel defence kept out the Quins from turning more pressure into points and a fine turnover and counter-attack gave Foel some territory in their visitors' half.

Aled Roberts kicked a penalty from under the posts to reduce the early deficit. A fine break from Jordan Simmonite gave Foel a further attacking platform and they were again rewarded with another penalty to further reduce the visitors' lead.

Ill-discipline

A brief break in play after a nasty clash of heads on the half-hour mark seemed to ignite both sides, with bouts of ill-discipline proving costly to both teams.

The first of three Felinfoel yellow cards was brandished just before half-time with Felinfoel in a great attacking position.

Felinfoel defended heroically again and were rewarded with another penalty under the posts to take the lead for the first time in the match.

From the resulting kick-off Felinfoel regained possession and some fine play from both backs and forwards led to the impressive Curtis Morris scoring wide out in the corner to give Felinfoel a fine 14-7 half-time lead.

Maesteg started the second half with an early try and conversion to tie the scores. A touchline dust-up saw both sides lose a player to yellow cards, which seemed to spur the visitors on and led to another try wide out on the left.

Another yellow card was shown to a Felinfoel player for some cynical play, which made the job in hand an almost impossible task.

But as the game started to open up, the Felinfoel backs found gaps in the Quins defence, and another Aled Roberts penalty reduced the visitors' lead going into the final 10 minutes.

A line-out on the Quins line led to a fine catch and drive from the Felinfoel forwards, with the old poacher Simon Delaney crashing over in the corner.

Aled Roberts converted from the touchline, and then Felinfoel defended as if their lives depended on it for the final 10 minutes and managed to see out the game and claim a fine 24-19 victory, ending the Quins remarkable run.

Felinfoel travel to Seven Sisters this Saturday looking to keep their own winning streak going.
