Far-right group plans protest march in city
FAR-RIGHT group the Welsh Defence League is planning another rally in Swansea, the Post can reveal.
The group's last appearance on the city's streets led to an angry confrontation with hundreds of anti-fascist protestors.
The two sides were only kept apart by a massive policing operation, and police are again bracing themselves for possible trouble.
The self-styled defence league are planning to hold marches in both Swansea and Cardiff on the same day — Saturday.
The same day will also see a Wales against South Africa rugby international in Cardiff, adding a further public order headache for police.
A spokesman for South Wales Police said: "We are aware of the planned activities and, as such, discussions with the organisers are well underway.
"As the police service we have a statutory responsibility to police any protests which occur within the South Wales Police force area.
Disruption
"Our aim, as it is with all such events, is to facilitate peaceful activity and to ensure the safety of the protestors, our staff, and any local communities affected.
"We will also be prepared to act swiftly upon unlawful activity to ensure that disruption to everyday life is kept to a minimum."
It is understood that a time for the proposed marches is yet to be agreed.
The WDL hit the headlines in October last year, when it organised a rally in Swansea.
Around 50 members of the group found themselves face-to-face with hundreds of anti-fascist protestors in Castle Square. During the protest, Nazi salutes were made and a flag was burned.
The WDL deny being racist or anti-Islamist, and insist it exists to counter "extreme Islam".
Among its aims are an end to mosque building, and blocking any introduction of Sharia law in Britain.
Following the October rally, the group claimed the event had been "hijacked" by fascists.
But Neath MP Peter Hain has described the WDL as "really sinister", and has labelled their views "repugnant" and "evil".

“I had a close shave from these guys this weekend. Thanks to the police for keeping order, else I'd be battered and abused.
If anyone saw the not so recent programme on the EDL (the main organisation) - Young British and Angry on BBC 3 (still on iplayer I think), it is obvious that they are racist, with the common message they want to put out being that it's not about race, but extremism... little do they know the irony of that.
And I think they missed an opportunity by not calling themselves the English Defence Force... EDF, EDF!!!”

“Sad march hare.
"Why should the health and welfare of the general populus play second fiddle to a few fools who are incapable of getting their message across to the public other than by marches!?"
Does this not apply to the UAF also?
Or is only those who have opposing views to you should be banned?
That truly smells of fascism.”

“@Jack, Swansea.
My posting of 04-Jun-2010 23:58 was not directed at you.
The "JS" does not stand for "Jack, Swansea".
There is nothing "puerile" in your comments.
Please accept my apologies as I did not realise that anyone would think that I was rebuking you or, for that matter, referring to you.
Sorry.”

“@R Lob.
Was your comment on 04-Jun-2010 23:58 directed at me? Assuming it was, and ignoring the the accusation of "puerile prattle", may I firstly point out that initially you wrote "I concur" to my comments, only to rebuke my very same comments later that same night..!?! Secondly, while your motivation may have been to see MJ receive a slap on the wrist for making spurious/alarmist claims, mine was to deter gullible individuals from joining the WDL march.”

“For those who haven't already read this article about the EDL/WDL, written by Billy Bragg, I strongly recomed it;
Well worth reading! Here's a few snippits;
"The rise of the English Defence League has been rapid. Since its formation at the start of the summer the group has organised nearly 20 major protests in Britain's cities, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Luton, Nottingham, Glasgow and Swansea. Its leaders are professional and articulate and they claim that the EDL is a peaceful, non-racist organisation. But having spent time with them, there is evidence that this movement has a more disturbing side. There is talk of the need for a 'street army', and there are links with football hooligans and evidence that violent neo-Nazi groups including Combat 18, Blood and Honour and the British Freedom Fighters have been attending demos. Violence has erupted at most of the EDL's demonstrations. In total, nearly 200 people have been arrested and an array of weapons has been seized, including knuckledusters, a hammer, a chisel and a bottle of bleach."
"Following the Manchester protest, when 48 people were arrested during street violence, the Bolton Interfaith Council Executive issued a stark warning that race relations were under threat and Communities Secretary John Denham compared the EDL to Oswald Mosley's Union of British Fascists, who ran amok in the Thirties. In response to these fears, the National Extremism Tactical Coordination Unit, a countrywide police team set up to combat domestic extremism, has been investigating the EDL."
"More than 100 divisions have been set up across Britain and a careful co-ordination means the EDL is becoming efficient and a potential catch-all for every far-right organisation in Britain."
"Even within the EDL there are concerns over links to extremists. A former member called Paul Ray recently claimed that the group had been hijacked by BNP activists, including a man from Weston-super-Mare, Chris Renton, who helped set up the EDL website. Ironically, Ray himself has extremist contacts, including a German former neo-Nazi who is friends with Northern Ireland Loyalist Johnny 'Mad Dog' Adair. Casuals United was the brainchild of Jeff Marsh, a convicted football hooligan from Cardiff City's Soul Crew, one of the most feared gangs in Britain. Marsh operates behind the scenes, orchestrating activities with both Casuals United and the Welsh Defence League, a sister group of the EDL. The public face of Casuals United is another Welshman called Mickey Smith. An avowed football hooligan, he is banned from Cardiff City's football ground. Together, Marsh and Smith organise the 50 or so gangs actively recruiting members across the UK."

“Mike James, Killay
Once again, I repeat, the 'white supremacist' remark, was part of a question! You were the one who believed the comment was more than just a question! Or is that the WDL have problems answering questions and have a understanding what was has been said!?
Why should the health and welfare of the general populus play second fiddle to a few fools who are incapable of getting their message across to the public other than by marches!? Is it because the Public, do not want to listen and read about what the WDL says!?
Do you really think making up statistics, is going to help the WDL 'cause'!? Is 'Lies Lies and more damn Lies', just part of the WDL and BNP, handbooks!? Oh, sorry, I forgot you have problems with questons, don't you, Mike!?”
