Fans denounce use of poster-boy Henson
RUGBY fans have reacted with surprise to the WRU's decision to use Strictly Come Dancing contestant Gavin Henson to sell the new Welsh jersey.
The Welsh game's governing body stands by their decision to use the 28-year-old to model the kits, despite him having been on extended leave from the game for almost 18 months.
But the choice has provoked anger amongst supporters of all the Welsh provinces.
Ospreys fan Lis Batcup, of Brynmill, said: "I cannot belive it. It seems strange that he is being used as an advertisement for playing the game, when he has been out of it for so long.
"And I'm not sure what it does for morale for players in the squad. I imagine they might feel aggrieved.
"If they are using current or retired players in the campaign, fair enough, but which is Gavin? I think he should keep his silky satin moves to the rugby pitch, not the dance floor."
Mount Pleasant-based Blues supporter Cerys Evans said: "I love Gav, but this isn't the right thing to do from the point of view of Welsh rugby, or even Gavin Henson's well being. It's ridiculous, and a good way to put out Welsh fans before a ball has even been kicked.
"I'd say Jamie Roberts and Leigh Halfpenny are far better options."
Scarlets supporter Mark Thomas, from Carmarthenshire, said: "It is an unbelievable decision. What sort of signal is it sending out to the other players?"
Oliver Curtis, from Cwmavon, said: "Who on earth thought it was a good idea to use Henson? I bet the other players are furious. And I bet we never see Henson in that jersey again."
Dawn Thomas, from Neath, said: "I think that it's a kick in the teeth for all the Welsh squad that the WRU have used Henson.
"Those that are loyal and hard-working get ignored for some poster boy who can't make a commitment to the team.
"They should have used someone like Alan Wyn Jones — he epitomises the hwyl and heart of Welsh rugby."
