THE grieving mother of a 39-year-old Llanelli man who died suddenly from a heart condition at the weekend has paid tribute to his fun-loving personality.

Sheila Phillips said her son, dad-of-one Richard Lewis, of New Street, Morfa, was an outgoing man with plenty of pals.

And in a cruel twist of fate, the lives of his best friend's family were also thrown into turmoil when Phil Davies, 37, suffered serious injuries in a car crash last Wednesday night and had to be induced into a coma (see right).

"Richard was a very popular guy, very kind, and made friends everywhere," said Sheila, 63, of High Street, Llanelli.

"I can't believe he's gone — it will be a very big funeral."

Sheila said Mr Lewis's partner Amy Marchant had fought to try to save his life after he collapsed at their home on Saturday.

"She tried to resuscitate him, she tried really hard," said Sheila. "It was so fast, it's unbelievable.

"It was heart-related. He had a narrowing of the arteries and a lack of supply of oxygen to the heart. He did say he had a few pains in his chest."

Sheila said Richard, a former Dafen Primary and Bryngwyn Comprehensive School pupil, had just started to be treated for high blood pressure. "He had only taken a couple of tablets," she said. "I am devastated."

Richard and Amy have a son, Jack.

Sheila said: "Richard always wanted children and he's gone before he's a year old. Jack is the image of Richard."

She said her son had been best man at Mr Davies's wedding.

"It's a terrible week for that generation," said Sheila.

The family have been inundated with messages of support, with tributes paid by Richard's colleagues in Spain, Gran Canaria and Southampton, as well as Swansea where he worked as a salesman reclaiming mis-sold personal protection insurance.
