Ex-addict was given discount to courier heroin for dealer

A RECOVERING heroin addict from Llanelli, who became a courier for his dealer and was caught with a quantity of the drug worth thousands, has been jailed.

Simon Huw Williams, of Glasfryn, was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court for possession of heroin with intent to supply and possession of cannabis.

Prosecutor, Mark Spackman, told the court that on February 29, police officers stopped a Fiat Punto being driven by Williams, 36, on the A40 north of Llandeilo.

When the vehicle was searched at Llanelli Police Station, three wraps containing 9.69 grams of heroin were found. Cannabis amounting to 1.26 grams was also found in the car.

“The defendant was arrested at the road and taken to the police station in a police car,” said Mr Spackman.

“He revealed he also had drugs concealed on him.”

A search at the station found a further 54.21 grams of heroin, in two separate packages.

“The value of this heroin on a retail basis, essentially the 54.21 grams of heroin could produce just over £5,500, and just under £1,000 for the 9.96 grams,” said Mr Spackman.

In interview, Williams said he had a heroin habit, and had gone to England to buy an ounce from his supplier.

“He had asked him to take a further one and a half ounces to a person in Carmarthenshire,” said Mr Spackman.

“In return, his supplier gave him drugs at a discount.”

The court heard Williams would supply heroin to others to fund his habit. Ian Wright, for Williams, said his client had fully co-operated with police.

“At the time, he had a significant, long standing addiction, where he would have half a gram of heroin per day,” said Mr Wright.

“Since then, he has taken positive steps to deal with that addiction.”

The court heard how a letter had been written by his elderly parents, who described the support their son gave them, while a letter from drug counselling service Prism also described the steps he had taken to rid himself of the habit.

Recorder Peter Rouch QC sentenced Williams to three years in prison for the heroin offence, with three months for the cannabis offence to run concurrently.

“You played a significant part in the chain of supply,” he said.

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Inspector Gary Phillips, said: “This is an excellent result and a real boost to what we’re trying to achieve with Safer Llanelli.

“Williams was regularly bringing in heroin into the town. Now he’ll be behind bars for a substantial period of time.”
