'Europe brought out the best in us'
SCOTT Williams believes the big European stage has brought the best out of the Scarlets as the West Walians kicked off their Heineken Cup campaign with a stunning 33-26 victory at Harlequins.
The Llanelli-based region had gone into the Pool 4 encounter struggling for form after an indifferent start in the Pro12.
But they turned on the style at The Stoop, running in three spectacular tries, including a superb solo effort from the Wales centre.
"It was high intensity and maybe we've lacked that at the start of the season. The Heineken Cup is a different level and it brought out the best in us," said Williams. "We have been our own worst enemy this season.
"We spoke in the week about wiping the slate clean and it was our chance to show what we can do. That's what we did.
"I thought the boys were outstanding, it was a one to 23-man performance."
Williams's man-of-the-match display puts him in pole position to start for Wales in the autumn Test series.
But first, he and his Scarlets colleagues will turn their attention to the formidable challenge of Parisian moneymen Racing Metro and their array of international stars at Parc y Scarlets on Saturday evening.
"If we can play the same as we did against Quins — or even better — then we'll be in with a chance next weekend," he added.
"It doesn't get any easier. We know we're in a tough group. We knew that when the draw was made, but that is what you want.
