Enzo still Banks on it
SPORTS Network are confident Enzo Maccarinelli will fight Johnathon Banks for the WBO title, despite the fact the American is rumoured to be eyeing up the IBF belt instead.
Maccarinelli and Banks were due to lock horns on February 28 following the late postponement of their December bout, with the vacant WBO crown up for grabs.
But with Banks — undefeated in his 20 fights — believed to be set to fight IBF champion Tomasz Adamek in New Jersey on February 27, Maccarinelli's hopes appeared to be very slim.
But Maccarinelli's promoters have reiterated their belief that the Swansea star will take on Banks at the MEN Arena on a new date of March 14 — on the same bill as Amir Khan and Nicky Cook.
In a confusing episode, Sports Network chief Frank Warren appeared to have given up hope of a Maccarinelli-Banks clash for the WBO crown on his website www.frankwarren.tv.
"Enzo Maccarinelli will also be in action, although it is unclear who his opponent will be," said Warren.
"He was due to fight Johnathon Banks in a WBO cruiserweight title challenge, but the American is now being linked to a fight with Tomasz Adamek in the States for the IBF crown.
"But with the WBO title vacant, the Welshman is likely to be in the mix for a version of it."
A spokesman for Sports Network, though, said Maccarinelli is still expected to fight Banks on the new date and venue.
When asked about the situation, the spokesman said: "As far as we know Banks is willing to fight Enzo on March 14 at the MEN Arena.
"That is all we know, so we are expecting that fight to go ahead."
