English is our main language
A HLloyd is looking at bilingualism through rose-tinted spectacles (Have Your Say, October 29).
He thinks "our nation's language," as he puts it, is Welsh, and that is his big mistake.
When Welsh-speakers leave school and enter the working world they are not in a bilingual environment, but in an English-speaking Wales, because English is the common language of Wales, not Welsh.
Incidentally, I understand that one (just one) of the downsides of a Welsh medium education is the difficulty such pupils have in spelling English words, after being used to the phonetic spelling of Welsh words.

And the huge problems facing these pupils, where the language of the home is not Welsh, do not bear thinking about.
Mr Lloyd might like to think that Wales is bilingual, but the rest of us know that is just a myth.

Mr.B.Jones from Rhos,Pontardawe.I won't give you his full name though he is known to me.
I see he now uses Email,yet has not accepted the other changes in Wales concerning our Mother tongue.
It may be true that pupils from Welsh medium schools have difficulty with spelling in English,I get the same problem and I recieved an English medium education and use said language more than my basic Welsh.
It is not the medium but the pupil who is at fault if they cannot spell.”

“I totally agree, but please remember that it's B Jones who's writing this rubbish, he/she has proved time and time again that they are one of these bigots who have a massive chip on their shoulder regarding the welsh language for some reason and every now and again spout these nasty offensive comments,so I really wouldn't take too much notice.”

“What a foul letter. Truly offensive comments. Welsh and bilingual comps consistently outperform english medium schools. Just look at the results to see! It is because pupils brains are stimulated by speaking more than one language from a young age. So a few pupils get a bit mixed up with spelling - I challenge anyone to go to an english medium school and find 100% perfect spelling and grammar. What a numpty! B.Jones consistently reveals his prejudice in every hate-riddled letter he writes. Disgusting!”
