Emotional reunion 69 years after surprise delivery
AN 86-year-old from Sketty has been reunited with the woman she delivered almost 70 years ago.
Lena Morgan, of Hendrefoilan Avenue, nervously stood on the platform of Swansea's High Street station on Saturday, to meet the woman she helped bring into the world on Tuesday, September 12, 1944.
Lena, who was just 17 at the time, was taken by surprise when her cousin Linda Parry called on her to deliver her second child, Olwen, while she was staying with her in Pandy, near Abergavenny.
She said: "Linda called me into the bedroom and said 'You will have to help me deliver my baby'.
"Well, I nearly died when she said that.
"I was speechless, bewildered and amazed all at the same time.
"Everything was a mystery to me."
But when the baby arrived Lena said she felt calm and happy.
"When the baby was born Linda said 'what is it?' and I said 'I don't know'.
"Can you imagine a 17-year-old girl in those days being put in that position? I will never forget the joy I felt holding her little head in my hand, helping her into our world, it was wonderful," she added.
On Saturday Lena was reunited with Olwen Mary, almost 69 years after she helped to bring her into the world.
Lena said: "This is the first time I've seen Olwen since she was born. I have never seen her again until now.
"I cannot explain the feeling of seeing her again, it is wonderful. When I think of that little thing and holding her in arms, I cannot believe it.
"She is the spitting image of her mother."
Olwen, 68, who lives in Rhos-on-Wye with her husband Brian, said: "I cannot believe it. It's just so wonderful to meet Lena, I'm so excited. She has got so much family history to tell me."
Olwen said she had brought a collection of photos to show Lena, to share her memories of the past 68 years.
"I never expected to see her after all this time, but we are definitely going to keep in touch and we are hoping Lena will come and visit us," Olwen added.
