TWO lifeboats and two fishing boats spent a couple of hours searching the sea after an emergency flare was reported by a member of the public.

The lifeboats were from New Quay and Aberystwyth but nothing was found and the incident was written off as a "false alarm with good intent".

The call was made last Wednesday at 5pm when a distress flare was believed to have been seen 10 miles north of Aberaeron.

Roger Couch, New Quay's lifeboat operations manager, commended his volunteer crew for responding promptly on their first launch of the year.
