Ellie Simmonds breaks record on way to Paralympics final
Swansea swimmer Ellie Simmonds smashed the Paralympic record this morning on her way to qualifying for the 400m freestyle final.
The 17-year-old Olchfa Comprehensive School pupil clocked the fastest time, finishing in a new personal best of 5:25.19, while American rival Victoria Arlen won the second of the heats.
The gold medal showdown takes place at the Aquatics Centre at 5.55pm today.
Simmonds, the defending champion in the event who trains at Wales National Pool in Swansea, is hoping to land the first of four golds she is aiming for at the Games.
