A SWANSEA singing sensation has made a whistle-stop tour of world famous cities for a new S4C show on sopranos.

Elin Manahan Thomas stars in Sopranos, a new six-part series tracing the history of the music and voice of sopranos.

The singer is originally from Gorseinon and filmed in Paris, Venice and Vienna following the stories of classical musicians such as Mozart, Haydn and Schubert.

She said: "I present in all six programmes and perform in all six. I sing four or five pieces in each one out of six or seven sung works.

"We have guest sopranos singing the remainder, either upcoming young voices or established people."

Sopranos also involved filming at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff and Oystermouth Cemetery, on the outskirts of Swansea, the final resting place of the composer Morfydd Llwyn Owen.

S4C's cultural content editor Rob Nicholls said: "As well as showcasing performances of the highest calibre, the Sopranos series also includes some wonderful scenery. Many of the pieces are very popular as music in TV adverts and films."

Sopranos begins tonight at 9pm on S4C.
