DARREN Edwards, who retired from amateur boxing after claiming bronze in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, was beaten in the last eight of the Commonwealth Federation Championships in Delhi.

Edwards has been in impressive form since returning to the ring in November and has already booked his place in the final of the Welsh Senior Championships in Swansea on March 26.

The 29-year-old is one of four Welsh boxers competing in Delhi, a prelude to the Commonwealth Games which also takes place in the Indian city in October.

In the opening round the Cwmavon boxer delivered a vintage performance against Naseer Mafivru of Tanzania, forcing the African into two standing counts on his way to a comprehensive 18-0 points win. However, against top English boxer Danny Phillips, a member of the GB elite squad, Edwards found the going far tougher and lost out 10-2 to his British rival.
