Simon Easterby's pride as Scarlets get tough

SIMON Easterby believes Friday night's gritty 18-13 win at Glasgow shows his Scarlets side possesses plenty of character to go with their try-scoring prowess.

The West Wales region crossed three times to make it 10 tries in two morale-boosting league victories.

But while the Scarlets' back division continues to grab the headlines, Easterby also hailed his players' commitment to the cause as they held off a late Glasgow comeback to go top of the RaboDirect Pro12 after two rounds.

"I am very proud of the way the players secured that win, they worked very hard for that victory," said the Scarlets head coach.

"It showed the character and commitment in this team.

"You can't ask more from the players than to come up to Glasgow and secure a tough win, especially on a big night and occasion for the Warriors and their home supporters.

"We finished off our opportunities well, our attack looked lively and to get three tries away from home was particularly encouraging.

"We also defended well for large chunks of the game. The boys showed determination and mental strength because psychologically it was always going to be a difficult game for us."

The Scarlets had led 18-6 thanks to tries from Aaron Shingler, Andy Fenby and George North — the two wings picking up their third league tries in two matches — before Glasgow hit back late on with a converted score from international scrum-half Chris Cusiter.

There was again a string of positives for Easterby, including another physical display from George Earle at lock, while Wales centre Jonathan Davies caught the eye in his first start since his hernia operation in the summer.

In the debit column, the scrum was an area of concern, but defensively the Scarlets looked strong, while the back division was a constant threat.

"I thought the boys came out of the changing room at half-time with a real edge," added Easterby. "Mentally and physically we were a match for Glasgow and it takes a certain mindset to do that away from home.

"There are positives that we can take from that game now in our preparations for our trip to Connacht this weekend."

The Scarlets will head to Galway with a one-point advantage over Munster and Ulster, the only other two unbeaten sides in the Pro12.

However, despite the impressive start to the campaign, Easterby is remaining cautious.

"We've got off to a decent start, but it's just that, a start," he added. "There are also some important areas of our game for us to work on going forward."
