EXCLUSIVE: Ki Sung-Yueng to join Sunderland on loan
SWANSEA City star Ki Sung-Yueng will join Sunderland on a season-long loan this weekend.
The Evening Post understands Ki said his goodbyes at Swansea’s training ground on Friday afternoon before heading off to the North East.
The likelihood is that his temporary switch to the Stadium of Light will be confirmed at some point on Saturday.
Ki made a bright substitute appearance in Swansea’s 2-1 defeat at Petrolul Ploiesti on Thursday night, having also come off the bench in Malmo and against Manchester United.
But the 24-year-old was keen to move on when it became apparent that he may struggle to get regular football at the Liberty this season.
A leading Championship club were interested in Ki’s signature, but he will instead become Sunderland manager Paolo di Canio’s 12th summer recruit.
Swansea have made it clear this is not the end of Ki’s time in Wales, and the Sunderland loan deal will include an option for Michael Laudrup to recall the South Korean international in January if he wishes.
Ki signed a three-year contract when he arrived from Celtic in a then club-record £5.5 million deal just over 12 months ago.
He made 38 appearances in his first year as a Swan, but has slipped down the pecking order following the summer arrivals of Jose Canas and Jonjo Shelvey.
