NATHAN Dyer hopes he's pressed his case for a Swansea City recall after coming off the bench to equalise against Southampton.

Dyer has had to be content with a place on the bench in recent weeks with Michael Laudrup opting to start with Wayne Routledge and Pablo Hernandez out wide.

The winger began each of Swansea's last four Premier League games as a substitute, but started the Capital One Cup tie at Liverpool where he scored in a 3-1 win.

And another goal against his former club has given Laudrup food for thought ahead of next weekend's trip to Newcastle.

"There's a lot of competition in all areas of the team. I've been out for a couple of games but I have to try to take my opportunities when I get them," said Dyer.

"I did that at Liverpool and again here so I am pleased with my performances.

"It's obviously frustrating, every player wants to play every game.

"Since I have been at Swansea I have played the majority of games so it is frustrating watching on, but I have to keep training hard and keep myself in the manager's mind.

"I won't get grumpy about it, I'll just keep working hard.

"Coming back from one down shows we have got character and players who can come on and make a difference."

After a run of three straight away defeats, Swansea's form on the road has improved. That victory at Anfield followed an impressive performance at Manchester City, where Swansea were unlucky to lose.

And Saturday's draw against the Saints was the first time since an opening-day victory over Queens Park Rangers that Swansea have claimed anything from a league game away from Liberty.

"Newcastle are a very good side and going to St James' Park is always tough," said Dyer. "We are going to have to make sure we are ready to face a big challenge.

"I'm not too sure if I've done enough (for a place), I just want to take my chances when they come and hopefully that will be enough. There is a lot of competition for places in the squad."

Despite not starting, Dyer has featured in every game this season, bar the Capital One Cup win at Crawley.

His goal against Southampton was all the more important because it maintains a cushion between Swansea and teams scrapping at the bottom of the table.

"When we went 1-0 down we needed that goal to get us back in the game. That's why the gaffer made the change and I am glad I got an opportunity," added Dyer.

"The manager told me to play my own game. He knows what I can do, I like to take on defenders and luckily I anticipated a pass between the goalkeeper and the defender and I could pounce on it and made it count

"We are trying to shut up shop away from home, we are trying to concede as few as possible. We are maybe not scoring that many away, but hopefully that will come next time."

“As the other one said, he has nothing to prove, but ML is trying some things around at the moment and no one can deny the changes made over the last few weeks have returned some much better results.

I dont think that has anything to do with Nathan, more to do with michu up front on his own which has given us more breathing space in midfield.

I just think Nathans pace and trickery makes him ideal for coming on later in the game when the other team are tiring so his key assets are amplified even more. But for me he is as good as anyone we have and I have no issue with him starting.”

“Nathan does'nt have anything to prove to anyone, he is one of our best players.”
