THE Ospreys lost 18-14 to the Dragons at a sodden Rodney Parade to leave their hopes of progressing in the LV= Cup hanging by a thread.

Results earlier in the day meant the Dragons were already out of the competition, but the Ospreys still have a slim chance of qualifying for the semi-finals if they beat Harlequins next Sunday and other results go their way.

A combination of heavy rain and over-zealous officiating made the first half a less than sparkling spectacle, with Steffan Jones and Matthew Morgan scoring three penalties each to make the score 9-9 at the interval.

Both sides' No. 8s, Ieuan Jones and Morgan Allen, were sin-binned before the break, with referee Llyr Ap Geraint Roberts's whistle a constant disruption.

Jones gave the Dragons an early 12-9 lead in the second half with his fourth penalty, but the Ospreys hit back with a try from Jonathan Thomas to go 14-12 in front.

The pendulum swung again as Jones struck again to restore the Dragons' lead after an hour, before the Ospreys' task became tougher when captain Rhys Webb was sin-binned for a high tackle.

Jones then slotted over his sixth penalty and, with the filthy conditions only worsening, the Ospreys' attempts to snatch a late win were washed away in the rain.
