Dockers get off to flying start
SWANSEA Dockers beat Kilvey Fords 2-0 in the curtain raiser to the new Swansea Senior League season.
Senior Cup winners Dockers were in fine form as they defeated last season's league champions.
There looked nothing to choose between the sides in the opening exchanges until a late challenge in the Kilvey area by Steven Stokes allowed Darren Ashford to slot home from the penalty spot.
Kilvey were having the greater share of possession but very nearly went 2-0 down when Michael Smith forced the best out of Kilvey keeper Ben Hopkins.
Dockers keeper Sparkes was tested when Luke Chappell was allowed to drive towards the Dockers area.
Dockers' Daniel Boat then saw his header come crashing back off the bar from a well-taken free-kick.
Kilvey had another chance when Liam Otten found Luke Chappell, who headed just wide when well placed.
Just before half-time, Sparkes pulled off his best save when he tipped over a rasping drive from Richards.
Early in the second half, Craig Stiens doubled Dockers' lead when he hung in the air to meet Luke Dalling's cross from the left.
Kilvey remained a threat and were very unfortunate not to score during a string of attempts in a 30-second spell. Sparkes pulled off a superb save from a diving header, two shots struck the bar and Gavin Challacombe stopped Chappell's shot on the line.
Chappell was sent off for dissent and Dockers made their advantage count and peppered Ben Hopkins throughout the latter part of the second half.
But he put in a superb performance to deny further goals.
