A GROUP of young carers were given a golden opportunity to have fun thanks to Duke of Edinburgh Award participants in Neath Port Talbot.

To achieve the gold award, those taking part in the scheme have to take part in and complete a five-day residential challenge, which this year was held at Margam Discovery Centre.

Part of the challenge requires them to spend a day with a group of people that they do not know and this year's participants chose to deliver an activity programme for a group of young carers.

Activities were tailored to be fun yet constructive and the young carers were treated to a baguette bar for lunch, while an outdoor creperie was also laid on to provide snacks during the day.

Neath Port Talbot Council leader Ali Thomas said he was humbled to learn how the participants stepped up and delivered such an amazing experience for the young carers.

"I have been told that the gold participants came away with a real sense of how fortunate they are in their own lives, and also a real sense of achievement having provided a fun day for a worthy group of young people," he said.

"This event is a perfect example of how the Duke of Edinburgh Award is having far-reaching benefits to the wider community as well as benefiting the participants themselves."

The young people who attended the residential will now undertake the expedition training programme with the Open Gold Centre.

Many of them will then continue as volunteer leaders with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Neath Port Talbot and continue to help other young people.

This year more young people in Neath Port Talbot gained their Duke of Edinburgh Award than anywhere in Wales.

In July the authority hosted two award ceremonies to ensure that every one of the 500 recipients celebrated obtaining their bronze, silver or gold awards.
