Disruption fears as work on Stradey homes set to start

DEVELOPERS have vowed to start work on the controversial housing project at Llanelli's Stradey Park within three weeks.

Now people living near the site fear they could have to endure nine years of disruption.

David Rees, of the Stradey Residents Action Group, said: "Obviously there's going to be huge disruption around this community due to all the heavy lorries and the construction machinery that has to go into the site.

"There's big concern already about the traffic on Sandy Road.

"We will also have the work on the new school at Furnace in the area which is going to exacerbate the position even further."

Joan Williams, of Denham Avenue, said: "They are building a new school at the top of the street and housing at the bottom — how are we going to cope with that?

"We can't get out onto Sandy Road as it is. It's one of the busiest roads in Llanelli.

"I hope with all this building work the council will be giving us a rate reduction.

"I didn't buy a house in Denham Avenue to have all these problems."

While Carmarthenshire councillors have discussed an application to give developers three more years to submit detailed plans for housing, the Welsh Government has issued a notice preventing the council from giving it the go-ahead.

The Government wants time to consider whether or not it should grant a final decision.

A spokesman for the developers told last week's planning committee work would start on site in three weeks time and the application was to provide them with the option to make changes to house types at a later stage.

The application was submitted by Asbri Planning Ltd.

The company's Richard Bowen added: "I can categorically tell you that it is the intention of the developers Taylor Wimpey to commence work in three weeks' time."
