Democracy is the victim here
COUNCIL meetings in Gorseinon are becoming uglier with every passing month.
This week mayor Victor Bruno came under fire from the gallery again. Public question time was so rowdy he had to adjourn — and that still wasn't enough to cool tempers.
The rift springs from the mayor's refusal to stand down after his first term, his call for a steep hike in the precept, his decision to spend more than £4,000 on an awards dinner and his refusal to debate the issue.
So is Mr Bruno an arrogant man doing the town a disservice, or is he the victim of a politically-motivated campaign?
A bit of both probably but, frankly, when a former chairman threatens to have the police called, it has all gone too far. If normal business can no longer be pursued in the council chamber both sides have lost.
Mr Bruno blames the media for his unpopularity. We have repeatedly tried to contact him and repeat our offer to let him put his side of the story.
But if he cannot regain public confidence soon he must resign — for the sake of the town and the image of grassroots democracy.
