Delight over barrage plan
I WAS delighted to discover that Dafydd Wigley is supporting Peter Hain over plans for a barrage — put forward by Hafen Power.
For it to be able to produce the power equivalent to three to four nuclear power stations is truly remarkable.
Of course, at the same time it will produce thousands of jobs for Wales and protect our steel industry. The real winner is it will reduce flooding for thousands. I do recall that when the Severn flooded a few years ago it came to inches of flooding one a power station in Gloucester.
People must wonder why we haven't done this already especially as countries such as Canada and Australia have such structures. Contrast this with the revival plans of hundreds of wind turbines. A source of power unreliable and at most produces just 3.5 per cent of our electricity.

“( "it will produce thousands of jobs for Wales and protect our steel industry" )
Don't bank on it, it will go to lowest price, so India or China, - the Germans French & Danes will run it….. the Welsh will get a few laboring jobs that the Poles & Rumanians don't want.
As at July 2012 UK owns just –
12% of offshore wind
37% of on land wind
& only 26% of ALL British Electricity Generating capacity.
The other 74% is owned by foreigners !!
( "of hundreds of wind turbines. A source of power unreliable and at most produces just 3.5 per cent of our electricity." )
Not hundreds – it's THOUSANDS !!
As I write this, on a cold day, 2°C, the UKs entire 4,413 wind turbine fleet is producing-
just … 1.7 % of demand !!! pathetic.
BUT making loads of cash for developers (mainly foreign), & energy prices are set to rise again to pay for it all.
So fortunately 79% of our energy is being supplied reliably by coal & gas & 18% by nuclear.
This site gives Live UK Grid status - demand & generation by fuels.….. now + Day, Wk, Mth, Yr, history.
Caution *, scales are all different so don't compare at first glance !! Look at the figures !! http://tinyurl.com/6ja8btf

“A UK energy minister has played down the prospect of the proposed £30bn Severn barrage getting the go-ahead.
Greg Barker dismissed claims that a law to secure the barrage could be passed before the next general election.
He said the company behind the scheme, from the Vale of Glamorgan to Somerset, must provide more information before the UK government could support it.”
