RAIL passengers on their way to Swansea were trapped in the Severn Tunnel for two-and-a-half hours this morning after the train they were travelling in hit a sheet of metal.

The 8.45am service from London Paddington to Swansea was stopped after hitting a large sheet of metal in the tunnel at around 10.15am, forcing the total closure of the tunnel.

First Great Western said there were some cancellations as a result of the delay, with services diverted.

The stretch was re-opened at around 1.30pm and an investigation is on-going.
