POLICE are investigating after a man's body was found in the toilets of a Llanelli pub yesterday morning.

Officers were called to Wetherspoon's in Stepney Street at around 7am, where the body of a 58-year-old Llanelli man had lain undiscovered in a toilet cubicle overnight.

The grim discovery was made by a manager, who came across a locked door in the gents' toilets when checking the pub before opening.

When he looked under the door, the manager could see someone inside, and tried to rouse the man by hitting the door.

Getting no response, he called Dyfed-Powys Police, and officers arrived to break down the door but discovered the man had died.

Wetherspoon's spokesman Eddie Gershon confirmed the incident, and said an internal investigation was also being carried out to determine why the body had not been discovered by staff before the pub was locked up for the night.

"The manager called the police to the pub after checking the pub this morning," he said.

"While checking the gents' toilets, one of the cubicle doors was locked.

"He looked at the bottom of the cubicle and saw the feet of a man.

"After banging on the door, he called the police, who broke the door down and discovered the body."

Mr Gershon added that the pub had remained closed to customers until 11am.

"The manager has handed over CCTV tapes to the police and liaised with the police," he said.

"Wetherspoon is unsure why the body was not discovered at closing time and is carrying out an internal investigation.

"We send our condolences to the family and friends of the man."

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said officers attended the pub at 6.56am following a report that there was a body in one of the toilet cubicles.

"The body is that of a 58-year-old local man," she added, but was not able to reveal any more information about his identity.

"Police have notified HM Coroner.

"But there are no apparent suspicious circumstances and next of kin have been informed."

A Wales Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed an emergency ambulance was also called to the pub.

"No patient was conveyed from the scene," she said.

“One important fact is that Mr Shrimpton was NOT found by the pub landlord as stated, but by the cleaning staff (specifically, a 21 year old girl).

Dont cover up the truth to save your negligence Weatherspoons”
