Danger on pavements
AS a visually and mobility impaired 91-year-old I support the letter from J T James (Have Your Say, September 27) about the perils of cyclists on pavements.
I am very apprehensive about going shopping in the Uplands now that the new university year has begun. The local police were very supportive and tried to get some notices put up, but this plan was refused by Assembly. Dropping litter is punishable, thought not life threatening, but pavement cyclists are. It would be encouraging to see a few fined.

“Cycling on pavements is against the law, yet the law allows disability wheel chairs to hurdle along at pedestrians peril, there are no tests nor insurance for these vehicles, some riders have lost their homes paying out on accidents they've caused, pedestrians have also been maimed: I wonder if cycling is now illegal as one could contest this in court I think. Not that I'm against disability riders as it gives them a new lease of life, but it does give one food for thought.”

“Cycling on the pavement is an offence - the police do not need to put up notices they need to take action - but they won't.”
